Port of Barcelona – Port Virtual Lab

Port Virtual Lab (PVL) stands at the forefront of educational innovation and community engagement in the logistics sector. Initiated as part of the Youth Employment in Ports of the Mediterranean (YEP MED) project and now operating independently, PVL is a collaborative platform that bridges ports and educational institutions across the Mediterranean and beyond. This year, this initiative has been submitted under the Ports4.0 programme by Puertos del Estado, on behalf of the Port de Barcelona, emphasizing its commitment to fostering digital and community integration within the port ecosystem.

PVL employs advanced digital simulation technologies to create an immersive learning environment where students from diverse international ports, including partners such as the Saudi Logistics Academy, STC Netherlands, and GLMS South Africa, engage in real-time logistics scenarios. This digital platform facilitates a deep understanding of port operations and logistics and serves as a community-building tool by connecting students and educational centres with the operational realities of nearby ports. The project excels in digital innovation by integrating comprehensive ERP software developed by Click&Cargo, which allows participants to perform simulated maritime, airfreight, and export management operations. This approach enhances the practical skills of future logistics professionals and encourages the adoption of sustainable practices, contributing to several UN SDGs, including Quality Education (SDG 4), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Climate Action (SDG 13).

PVL’s visionary leadership and collaborative model have established a sustainable educational framework that promotes digitalization and strengthens community ties between ports and their surrounding regions. The project’s impact is amplified by its measurable success in improving educational outcomes, demonstrating the potent synergy of digital technology and community engagement in the global logistics landscape. By submitting this project for the IAPH Sustainability Awards, PVL underscores its dual commitment to advancing technological education and fostering a collaborative community across international borders.
