Collaborative project – Arrival optimization through elimination of Sail Fast Then Wait

The Blue Visby Solution (“BVS”) represents a novel approach to the largest systemic carbon inefficiency in shipping, the operational practice of Sail Fast Then Wait (SFTW), which is responsible for about 20% of the carbon footprint of shipping. By combining specially designed components (contracts, data, algorithms, software, operations and a benefit-sharing methodology), BVS presents a systemic solution that can be deployed at scale, across all types of berthing models and systems: terminals that operate a line-up (stem), terminals that apply First-Come-First-Served and terminals where the port authority determines the berthing sequence. Crucially, BVS does not interfere with port or terminal operations, and it does not interfere with the vessels’ own voyage planning and weather routing.

The Blue Visby Solution has been designed to address all causes of SFTW (data, information, operational expediency, contracts, financial incentives), by creating a comprehensive solution that can be widely deployed, regardless of type of ship, regardless of type of fuel and regardless of the berthing model used in any particular port or terminal. In addition to GHG emissions reductions of 10-20%, BVS also has the potential to reduce mortality from near-shore pollution from waiting ships, as well as whale strike risk and underwater radiated noise by about 40%.

As of April 2025, the Blue Visby Consortium has 42 participants, including shipowners, charterers, ports, insurers, financial institutions and associations. Port members are the Port of Rotterdam, Port of Newcastle (NSW, Australia), the Port Authority of New South Wales, the Port of Yokohama and the Panama Canal Authority. With input from Consortium members, the project has progressed from academic studies to hindcast simulations to digital twin virtual pilots to prototype trials. Commercial and operational deployment begun in December 2024 at the port of Kwinana in Australia with Consortium member CBH Group.
