Fiji, as an island nation in the South Pacific, recognizes the importance of sustainable development and environmental conservation. The concept of a Smart and Green port aligns with Fiji’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing innovative technologies. Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) strategy for charting a smart and green pathway reflects a holistic and forward-thinking approach. By focusing on 4 key areas, emphasizing value creation, sustainability, digital transformation, and work-life balance, FPCL aims to achieve a well-rounded and sustainable port ecosystem that benefits not only the organization but also its employees, customers, and the broader community. This unique approach positions FPCL as a leader in the industry and demonstrates its commitment to long-term success and responsible port management.
The Green Port Master Plan (2019-2023) has been developed and implemented, which outlines the measures and initiatives that Fiji Ports is carrying out to minimize any environmental impact. The Plan is distinct and aligned with the 5-Year Strategic Plan and will aid Fiji Ports in contributing towards the accomplishment of various SDGs. Fiji Ports is committed to implementing sustainable practices and minimizing its environmental impact in all its activities.
FPCL aligns its vision and initiatives with the overall strategic objectives of the IMO and the Pacific Ports Vision 2030-2050 Framework. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping and supporting the sustainable economic development of Pacific ports by improving the efficiency and sustainability of maritime ports, which are essential elements of the transportation system.
Furthermore, Fiji Ports has taken steps to promote sustainability throughout its supply chain by implementing Port Procurement Sustainability Guidelines. Under these guidelines, product and service suppliers must provide information on their sustainability credentials. This approach helps Fiji Ports make informed procurement decisions that prioritize sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
In addition, Fiji Ports has established an “Energy Tracker” and “Green Port” dashboard that provides an overview of the progress made in implementing its green port initiatives. The dashboard lists activities outlined in the Green Port Master Plan, allowing Fiji Ports to track and report on its environmental performance and identify areas for improvement.
