The Algeciras Port Digital Academy (APDA) is a key initiative launched by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) at the end of 2022. It aims to foster a culture of innovation and ensure continuous training and development of employees, which are essential pillars of the APBA’s Innovation Strategy. This initiative addresses the competitive business environment and the shortage of skilled personnel by creating a strong local digital ecosystem, or “digital quarry,” for all agents of the port community, including the Port Authority.
The initiative focuses on: attracting and retaining young digital talent by connecting them with the labor market and logistics-port sector; providing digital training for non-technological university personnel and port community professionals to reorient their careers towards the technology sector; enhancing the digital capabilities of APBA employees to accelerate digital transformation and stimulate innovation; training the region’s population in specific technologies to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of digitalization; and increasing regional employability through a future open training campus focused on digitalization, technological development, innovation, and emerging technologies
Overall, the APDA stands out for its comprehensive talent development strategy tailored specifically to the needs of the Port of Algeciras and local stakeholders through closely cooperation with several public and private stakeholders, including MAERSK, Vodafone, the University of Cádiz, Algeciras City Council, and the Andalusian Government. Furthermore, it successfully bridges the gap between young digital talent and the port sector, supporting the digital transformation and strengthening digital competencies through targeted training and upskilling initiatives.
In summary, APDA not only enhances the digital capabilities of the entire port community, but has helped in building a tangible technology and talent hub for socio-economic dynamization of the region.
