Ports of Auckland is thrilled to announce our emission reduction targets have been verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and will be launched on the SBTi website in mid-April 2021. Our commitment to GHG reductions is ambitious. Our journey is now well underway and we have some fabulous projects to share.
Our roadmap is innovate and leverages technology and partnerships. We are trialing 2nd Generation Biofuel, a Renewable Diesel made from residual waste streams. We are trialing this in our harbor vessels and container handling equipment. We have a fully operational hydrogen refueling facility on port now. We are excited about trialing hydrogen container handling equipment in the future, but for now we are using it for road based vehicles. The best part about this project is the partnering with our City. Auckland Transport is using our facility to trial their first hydrogen bus.
And of course our Electric Tug ‘Sparky’, the build is nearly complete and we are super excited about welcoming Sparky to our fleet of tugs this year. It is the world’s first full sized electric tug.
