5G VALENCIAPORT is a flagship initiative positioning the Port of Valencia at the forefront of smart and sustainable port transformation. Coordinated by Fundación Valenciaport and led by the Port Authority of Valencia as network owner and operator, the project demonstrates strong institutional leadership in accelerating digitalisation in line with the EU Digital Decade.
At its core, the project deploys a pioneering private 5G standalone network using dedicated spectrum (n40 band), ensuring full control, security and performance. The infrastructure includes 17 base stations, edge computing and a cybersecurity platform, delivering high-capacity, ultra-reliable connectivity. The network is designed to achieve over 98% coverage of the entire port area, enabling seamless operations in one of Europe’s busiest logistics hubs.
The project’s innovative character lies in combining 5G, AI and edge technologies to support transformative use cases. These include an advanced police surveillance system leveraging drones and real-time video analytics, and immersive remote maintenance and training through augmented reality. These applications significantly enhance safety, efficiency and decision-making.
5G VALENCIAPORT delivers measurable sustainability impacts aligned with the UN SDGs: reduced emissions (e.g.−10% in police operations), faster response times (−20%), and up to 80% reduction in certain maintenance activities through remote support, minimising travel and resource use. Built on strong collaboration between public and innovation stakeholders, the project also promotes replication by generating best practices for other ports. With proven performance (availability>99.9%) and clear operational benefits, 5G VALENCIAPORT sets a new benchmark for resilient, low-carbon and digitally enabled port ecosystems worldwide.
