The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has as strategic goal to reach carbon neutrality in the year 2030. One of the main pillars of the decarbonization of the port is electrification, for which 12 specific actions have been carried out led by PAV.
Actions include:
- Improvement of the port electric grid: PAV as the port electric grid manager is enhancing its capacity to respond to future demands. Two 90 MVA new substations will be installed (Actions 1-2), the first of which will be operative at the end of 2026
- Onshore Power Supply (OPS): Two OPS supply points are already being installed by PAV (Actions 3-4) to provide OPS for containerships (MSCTV terminal) and other 4 OPS supply points for Cruiser and passenger vessels (Trasmediterranea terminals). Both projects will be operative in June 2026. Funding for further development has already been awarded to PAV and terminal operators, for the installation of 12 additional OPS supply points at the port (involving APMT, Transmediterranea and CSP)(Actions 5,6 y 7). These initiatives will be operative in December 2028
- Port electrification: MSCTV has switched most of its 18 RTGs fleet from conventional to electric RTGs with the support of PAV (Action 8).
- Renewable production: Almost 20% of the current electricity consumption at the port of Valencia is produced in 2 recently installed photovoltaic plants: a 1.4 MWp plant (Action 9) and a 5.7 MWp plant (Action 10). PAV is leading RENMARINAS (Action 11) project to test floating PV in open seawaters (1.5 MWp), and wave energy (270 kW), both starting in 2026. PAV also participates in RENEWPORT EU funded project (Action 12), to test walkable PV (6 kW pilot) and vertical PV (100 kW).
The plan contributes directly to several SDGs, specifically SDG7 Affordable and Clean Energy, and SDG13 Climate Action.
