Port of Los Angeles – Carbon Intensity Gateway

The Carbon Intensity Gateway (CIG) is an innovative environmental intelligence platform developed by the Port of Los Angeles to address a critical challenge facing modern ports: the lack of integrated, actionable visibility into the environmental impacts of goods movement. Motivated by the need to move beyond retrospective emissions reporting and support the Port’s decarbonization goals, CIG consolidates operational and environmental data from vessels, trucks, rail operations, cargo-handling equipment, shore power systems, and air-quality monitoring into a unified cloud-based platform.

Aligned with the IAPH evaluation criteria, CIG demonstrates a highly original and innovative character by combining logistics, emissions, and environmental data into a digital twin environment featuring predictive analytics, geospatial visualization, emissions attribution, forecasting, and scenario modeling capabilities. The initiative reflects strong vision and leadership from Port management, who invested in a scalable solution that embeds sustainability into day-to-day operational decision-making rather than treating it solely as a reporting function.

The project’s primary objective is to transform fragmented data into actionable intelligence that supports emissions reduction, electrification planning, environmental compliance, and evidence-based infrastructure investments. CIG contributes directly to UN SDGs 9, 11, 13, and 17 by advancing innovation, sustainable communities, climate action, and multi-stakeholder partnerships. It was developed through extensive cooperation between the Port of Los Angeles, the State of California, San Diego State University, technology providers, and supply-chain stakeholders, exemplifying broad stakeholder engagement.

Key achievements include establishing a single source of truth for port-related emissions, enabling near real-time monitoring and forecasting, supporting electrification initiatives, improving environmental transparency, and creating a scalable architecture that can be replicated across ports and logistics hubs worldwide. By delivering measurable environmental insights and empowering data-driven sustainability decisions, CIG represents a transformative model for sustainable port operations.
