Port of Gothenburg – Youth Sailing Programme

To inspire young people to discover the world of maritime, shipping, and port operations, while fostering social integration across socioeconomic boundaries, the Port of Gothenburg proudly sponsors the Youth & Sailing initiative. The program combines the joy of sailing with opportunities for personal growth and employment, integrating youth from both underserved and affluent parts of the city.

Youth & Sailing is a collaboration between Gårdstensbostäder, the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, and Rotary Långedrag, and is recognized as one of the city’s most successful integration projects. In the summer of 2024, 27 young participants completed sailing school, and 10 were offered summer jobs as sailing instructors and port hosts.  The free, week-long summer school helps participants form new friendships, build confidence, and expand their social networks. Some often return as sailing instructors, becoming role models for others in their community.

With a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, this long-term initiative reflects the Port’s ambition to secure future maritime talent while increasing the representation of employees with diverse backgrounds. Employees from the Port of Gothenburg are also personally engaged in the program. During one of the sailing weeks each summer, port employees volunteer their time to transport the children to and from the marina, strengthening the bond between the port and its future generation.

As Scandinavia’s largest port, the Port of Gothenburg is not only a vital logistics hub for Sweden and the world, but also a socially responsible actor, committed to addressing societal challenges through inclusive, long-term community engagement.
