As part of its commitment to developing climate-resilient, sustainable, and future-ready port infrastructure, Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) successfully delivered a major Wharf Rehabilitation Project at Queen’s Wharf, Port of Lautoka. Central to this initiative was the deployment of GreenTech Shield (GTS), an innovative Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) technology designed to extend the service life of reinforced concrete marine structures while reducing environmental impacts.
Marine infrastructure is highly vulnerable to chloride-induced corrosion, a leading cause of structural deterioration in coastal environments. Unlike conventional galvanic anode systems that provide localized and passive protection, GTS actively extracts embedded chlorides from concrete surfaces, addressing corrosion at its source. By significantly reducing chloride concentrations around steel reinforcement, the technology restores structural integrity, prolongs asset life, and minimizes the need for recurring repair interventions.
Implemented between September 2023 and May 2025, the GTS system consistently exceeded the performance requirements of NACE SP0107-2021 standards. In several treatment zones, chloride levels were reduced well below the critical threshold of 0.4% by weight of cement before reaching prescribed energy input limits, demonstrating both the efficiency and effectiveness of the technology.
The project delivers important sustainability benefits through indirect carbon emission reductions. By extending the lifespan of existing infrastructure and reducing the frequency of major rehabilitation works, the initiative lowers demand for carbon-intensive construction materials such as cement and steel. The technology also requires no ongoing power supply and minimal maintenance, resulting in reduced lifecycle emissions, lower material waste, and improved operational efficiency.
Executed with zero disruption to port operations and under stringent environmental controls, the project strengthens a critical gateway for Fiji’s cargo and passenger movements. Aligned with FPCL’s Green Port Master Plan, the initiative provides a scalable and replicable model for sustainable port infrastructure across Small Island Developing States.
