of green port programs currently in operation

WPCAP is working hard to provide inspiration for ports seeking to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through collaborative actions and joint research.

One of the initiatives taken involved a worldwide survey to find out details of the shore power infrastructure in ports. The survey was sent to ports that had already implemented or were planning to implement an OPS system.

The detailed survey was answered by 16 ports which formed the basis of an innovative tool developed by WPCAP Working Group 3 using Google Earth. The WPCAP Power2Ship dynamic Google Earth Map provides a geographic overview of ports equipped with operational high voltage onshore power supply for visiting vessels.

This has since been supplemented with further cross-referenced information on ports with high voltage onshore power supply (OPS) collated by the IAPH World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP), based on data from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), the DNV GL Alternative Fuels Insight portal and an annex of a submission by environmental NGO Friends of the Earth to the IMO’s 73rd Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 73).

The objective of this tool is to help other ports worldwide who are considering to implement shore power solutions to have the latest information on worldwide operational Power2Ship systems.

Shipowners and operators seeking additional information on available onshore power supply locations at ports are recommended to register an account onto the DNV GL Alternative Fuels Insight portal https://afi.dnvgl.com/.
