The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is guided by the City of Hamburg’s objective to become a carbon neutral port by 2040. On shore power plays a crucial role in implementing the environmental strategy. By 2030 all the major terminals shall be equipped with on shore power facilities.

Following its 12 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) pilot facility at Cruise Terminal Altona, the HPA’s current program includes two more Cruise Terminals:  Hafen City with 2 Connection Points (CP) and 14 MVA and Steinwerder with 1 CP and 16 MVA for the largest vessels to be completed in 2023 and 2022 respectively.

On the Container Side Terminals Eurogate, (3 CP, 7.5 MVA each), Burchardkai, (3 CP, 7.5MVA) and Tollerort (1 CP, 7.5 MVA) will be completed in 2022.

Further terminals also for other vessel classes will be targeted thereafter. An ambitious effort to upgrade and expand the on shore power facilities for inland vessels is also underway.
