Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority has established a public-private-public cooperative framework to strengthen safety management at petrochemical-related piers in the Yeosu area of Gwangyang Port.
Petrochemical cargo accounts for 54% of the port’s total cargo volume, making robust safety measures especially critical, particularly at public piers handling various hazardous materials. However, the operation and safety management of pipelines within the piers is carried out independently by individual companies, limiting the port authority’s oversight and increasing the risk of significant damage in the event of an incident.
To address this challenge, the port authority is launching a Safety Management Council aimed at improving coordination and accident prevention through regular meetings, joint safety inspections, and collaborative emergency drills. This council will bring together 16 organizations, including private operators, the Yeosu Coast Guard, and the port authority itself, to transition from fragmented safety practices toward a unified, cooperative safety management system that enhances overall port resilience.
