Recycling is a process that transforms what would be discarded into new materials. Allowing that part of the waste generated to return to the value chain is a way to reduce environmental pollution and a valuable tool in the fight against climate change. The recycling of administrative and operational waste is among the main actions implemented by Porto Sudeste to reduce carbon emissions. The correct segregation and reuse is part of the company’s socio-environmental commitment.
The project targets the management of waste in a sustainable, efficient and responsible way and aims to reduce, each year, the sending of waste to sanitary landfills. Every year, Porto Sudeste reduces the generation of waste, optimizing the correct segregation at source and maximizing reuse and recycling processes. Through concentrated efforts and implemented actions, the port recycled in 2024 the 99% of all solid waste generated from its operations. There were 14.6 thousand tons of materials such as plastic, paper, metal, wood, rubber, oil and electronics. Throughout the year, 130,586 kilos of organic waste were sent for composting, generating almost 250 kilos of fertilizer, which was used for landscaping of the company itself, strengthening the circular economy.
The numbers show the success in implementing a sustainable waste management culture in Port Sudeste operations. Employees’ awareness reflects the collective understanding that every action, however small it may seem, contributes significantly to environmental preservation. Reducing the amount of waste destined for landfills and encouraging the reuse of materials are just a few examples of how recycling and segregation work together to conserve natural resources and combat climate change. Promoting these values and practices benefits the whole society, ensuring a more balanced and healthy
environment for current and future generations.
