With its new port expansion project, the Port of Valparaíso is tagreting the development of sustainable, participatory, and community-oriented infrastructure. The project was developed in response to projected port congestion in the region and is built on a sustainable and inclusive vision. Following the legal challenges faced by a previous version of the project, Empresa Portuaria Valparaíso (EPV) initiated an unprecedented dialogue process with local communities, regional authorities, and national stakeholders to redesign the expansion based on consensus and sustainability.
As a result, the project was redefined with a reduced territorial footprint, a redistribution of works between Terminals 1 and 2, and the inclusion of key infrastructure to meet future demand while minimizing urban and environmental impact. This transformation was accompanied by an integrated sustainability strategy, a pioneering effort at the national level, addressing environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The project includes measures such as equipment electrification, future use of green hydrogen, OPS systems, water and energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, workplace safety, support for local suppliers, and the creation of a Corporate Social Responsibility Roundtable.
EPV also launched the “Acuerdo por Valparaíso” (Agreement for Valparaíso) agreement, signed by community actors and regional authorities, establishing a public commitment that links the port expansion with a strategic coastal improvement plan. This agreement foresees the opening of the waterfront to the city through new public spaces, fostering a positive relationship between port development and urban quality of life. The project is scheduled for tender between 2028 and 2029, with the first phase of the works expected to be completed by 2034.
