The Port of San Diego is driving innovation through its Maritime Clean Air Strategy, with over $227 million committed by the Port, tenants, and partners to reduce emissions and electrify operations for a healthier, more sustainable San Diego Bay. Recognizing the need to build trust and promote shared understanding, the Port launched the Portside Community Academy (Academy) in 2023—an original and highly innovative outreach initiative.
The Academy was developed for residents—especially those in historically impacted portside neighborhoods such as Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Sherman Heights, and west National City—to bridge longstanding information gaps. The immersive, five-session, multilingual program provides participants with dynamic learning experiences including guided terminal tours, expert presentations, and a narrated boat trip. Participants learn from Port staff and industry leaders, gaining insight into maritime operational responsibilities, air quality improvement strategies, and the Port’s long-term sustainability vision. Curriculum topics include maritime industry fundamentals, environmental justice, zero-emissions technologies, and clean air strategies.
The Academy aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for Good Health and Well-being (3), Quality Education (4), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Climate Action (13), and Partnerships for the Goals (17). With nearly 150 graduates in just two years, the Academy has demonstrated measurable impact, fostering a growing network of community ambassadors who actively attend Port board meetings, host peer workshops, and contribute to clean air policy conversations. Beyond education, the Academy is a social equity initiative that deepens public trust, supports inclusive governance, and strengthens public-private cooperation. All materials are fully documented and adaptable for replication by other ports or agencies.
The Portside Community Academy is more than a program—it’s a bold, scalable movement in environmental justice, civic engagement, and sustainable port leadership. It empowers residents to become informed ambassadors and advocates for environmental stewardship in their communities.
