As part of its clean shipping vision, the Port of Amsterdam has the ambition to be a front-runner port in accelerating sustainability in the cruise sector. The sea and river cruise Passenger Terminal in Amsterdam is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by apartments, hotels and residential areas.
Hence, the Port of Amsterdam assumes its responsibility towards the local community and its need for a healthy, safe and secure environment in which cruise vessels and terminals operate sustainably without causing nuisance. From a broader perspective, the Port of Amsterdam wants to play a facilitating and stimulating role towards the cruise sector by offering all services needed for sustainable cruise operations.
In line with its role as facilitator, the port provides Onshore Power Supply (OPS) for both sea and river cruise vessels, efficient and safe ship-to-ship LNG bunkering, and state-of-the-art port reception facilities for the delivery of ship generated waste. Aiming to stimulate better performance, the port offers incentives in the form of reduced port dues to all sea going cruise vessels that participate in the IAPH Environmental Ship Index (ESI), and further rewards vessels with better performing engines and these being able to connect to OPS.
In parralel, using its power as regulator, the Port of Amsterdam prohibits the use of open loop scrubbers at the quay side, applies a stricter admission policy year by year, and strict enforcement in cases of violations of soot emissions regulations. By fullfilling its role as facilitator, stimulator and regulator, the Port of Amsterdam ensures healthy, safe and secure, sustainable cruise operations.
