Namibian Ports Authority (NAMPORT) – Walvis Bay Maritime Week

Namport Maritime Week is a flagship community-building initiative of the Namibian Ports Authority, launched in 2022 through the Namport Social Investment Fund to connect young Namibians with the maritime, logistics and blue economy sectors. The project responds to a national challenge: although Namibia’s ports are central to trade, logistics and regional economic development, many learners especially from inland regions have limited exposure to port operations and maritime career opportunities.

The objective of Maritime Week is to transform Namport’s ports into learning platforms that promote maritime awareness, career guidance, youth empowerment and inclusive national participation. Through guided port tours, career exhibitions, vessel visits, education talks, stakeholder engagement and a national debating competition, learners gain first-hand exposure to port operations and interact directly with maritime professionals. The programme also supports education through grants and promotes participation from all 14 regions of Namibia.

Since its launch, Maritime Week has grown from an inaugural open-port initiative attracting approximately 800 learners into a nationally recognised platform. It has hosted learners from all 14 regions, involved teachers, schools, government institutions, industry partners and community stakeholders, and awarded educational grants of N$500,000, N$750,000 and N$850,000 over successive years.

The project strongly aligns with the IAPH Community Building theme by advancing open-port access, education and employment initiatives, community engagement, stakeholder cooperation and sustainable port-community integration. It demonstrates innovation through its “port-as-classroom” model, leadership through Namport’s sustained investment and NSIF governance, measurable sustainability contribution through SDGs 4, 8, 9 and 17, and strong cooperation with societal and commercial stakeholders. By inspiring future maritime leaders, Maritime Week strengthens Namibia’s maritime talent pipeline while deepening public understanding of the port’s role in sustainable development.
