Khalifa Port – Sustainable Port Development

Abu Dhabi Ports Group (ADPG) was established in 2006 as a master developer of ports and industrial zones in Abu Dhabi. ADPG has evolved into a premier trade enabler and pioneer in automation, while supporting economic diversification of Abu Dhabi. Ports Cluster of ADPG owns and operates more than 11 ports & terminals under the umbrella of ADPG. Khalifa Port is the flagship port of ADPG which is built on sustainable development principles.

Since its opening in 2012, Khalifa Port has undergone several expansion projects that have resulted in growing its total area from 2.43 sq.km to 8.63 sq.km. while increasing quay wall from 2.3 kilometers to 12.5 kilometers. Khalifa Port added 6 km of new bulk and general cargo quay in between 2018 and 2022 alone, making it one of the fastest growing port in the world. Ports cluster’s development result in creation of over 18200 jobs across Abu Dhabi emirate and contribute 4.2 billion to the emirate’s non-oil GDP.

Port Cluster believes in sustainable growth both environmentally and operationally. This is reflected in the operating philosophy of Khalifa Port where our commitment to reducing GHG emissions is evidenced in the projects and new technologies helping us to operate sustainably. The efforts have resulted in reduction of GHG emissions by 17% year on year since 2020.

The energy efficiency projects at Khalifa Port are planned to prevent adverse environmental impacts arising out of developmental activities while complying fully with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Khalifa Port administration also encourages its customers and concessionaires to adopt newer technologies such as autonomous port truck system which was first in the region. Khalifa Port was recognized as port of the year for 9 years in a row by Maritime Standards Award and has achieved Diamond level in Harvard Business Council International Award (2022).
