The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is committed to fostering environmentally sustainable port operations through its Green Port Policy (GPP) 2024-2028, which aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote ecological conservation. By integrating the principles of sustainable development, the policy ensures that port activities minimize environmental degradation while supporting Kenya’s commitment to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Particularly Affordable and Clean Energy, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Climate Action, Life Below Water as well as Kenya’s Vision 2030.
The GPP emphasizes transparency, accountability, and stakeholder collaboration, adopting international best practices in Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG). Through innovative technologies and eco-friendly strategies, KPA aims to reduce carbon emissions, enhance waste management, prevent water pollution, and protect biodiversity, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the expense of environmental health.
Key Green Initiatives Under the GPP include:
- Renewable Energy Transition- Over 750 kWh of solar energy is generated at the Port of Mombasa, reducing reliance on unstable grid power and lowering operational costs. 75% of Kenya’s energy mix is renewable (hydro, geothermal, wind, and solar), supporting KPA’s shift to clean energy in line with SDG 7.
- Emission Reduction & Air Quality Improvement- Shore power for vessels (cold ironing) is being piloted, with full implementation expected by December 2025, significantly cutting emissions from docked ships. Modern, energy-efficient port equipment, including 18 hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, reduces fuel consumption and pollution.
- Eco-Friendly Mobility & Green Infrastructure- Adoption of electric forklifts and plans to convert Terminal Tractor Trucks (TTT) to electric, advancing Sustainable Infrastructure. Future expansion of e-mobility across port vehicles to further reduce carbon footprint.
- Waste & Water Pollution Control- Enhanced waste management systems to prevent marine pollution, supporting Life Below Water. Strategies to mitigate oil spills and chemical discharges, protecting coastal ecosystems.
- Biodiversity & Ecosystem Protection- Initiatives to preserve marine and coastal biodiversity in line with Life on Land. Collaboration with environmental agencies to ensure sustainable port expansion without harming fragile ecosystems.
KPA’s Green Port Policy not only prioritizes environmental conservation but also ensures social inclusivity and economic resilience, creating a model for sustainable port operations in Africa. By embracing green technologies, renewable energy, and stakeholder partnerships, KPA is paving the way for a low-carbon, climate-resilient future, in harmony with global sustainability agendas. Through these efforts, the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu are set to become benchmarks for eco-friendly maritime hubs, demonstrating that economic progress and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
