Kenya Ports Authority has strategically expanded its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) beyond the coastline to tackle critical educational deficits in rural Kenya, specifically targeting Matakiri Mixed Day Secondary School and Kathawana Secondary School in Embu, Tharaka Nithi County. This initiative directly confronts systemic barriers including overcrowded facilities, a lack of gender-sensitive infrastructure, and inadequate practical science resources that have historically hindered student performance and contributed to high dropout rates, particularly among girls.
Implemented during the 2025/2026 financial year, the project features two core interventions: a modern, secure girls’ dormitory at Matakiri, housing over 60 students and decongesting previously cramped quarters where up to 90 shared space; and a fully equipped science laboratory at Kathawana, enabling hands-on learning in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Executed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, local school administrations, and parent associations, the project ensures sustainability and community ownership.
This initiative serves as a model for sustainable development by providing quality secondary education that equips over 200 learners with foundational skills for higher education and employment, breaking the cycle of poverty. The laboratory closes the material gap between urban and rural schools, while the dormitory removes distance as a barrier to attendance, directly enhancing learning outcomes and transition rates. Crucially, the safe, hygienic accommodation empowers girls, reducing harassment and absenteeism, thereby narrowing the gender gap in education retention.
KPA’s investment in Tharaka Nithi represents a deliberate effort to redistribute resources from a major economic hub to marginalized regions, ensuring geography does not dictate a child’s potential. This is not mere philanthropy but a strategic investment in human capital. For the community, the dormitory symbolizes safety and liberation, while the laboratory opens doors to careers in medicine and engineering. Built on community feedback, the project’s immeasurable impact includes increased attendance and renewed hope. By linking corporate success with community well-being, KPA demonstrates it is not just building ports but building futures, a holistic approach worthy of recognition.
