Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority – Reducing Emissions through Battery-Exchange and Electric Trucks

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s premier container port, continues to lead in sustainable port operations by integrating innovative green logistics solutions. Among the latest initiatives are the deployment of zero-emission trucks and the introduction of battery-swapping electric trucks (eTrucks) to reduce carbon emissions across its terminals and support India’s net-zero goals.

Zero-emission trucks, primarily electric trucks powered by batteries, are being introduced at JNPA to replace conventional diesel-fueled cargo vehicles. These trucks offer a cleaner alternative for container movement within the port premises, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and reducing noise pollution. Within two years, all the trucks plying inside the port operational area will be green trucks.

In addition to fixed-battery electric trucks, JNPA is also exploring and implementing battery swapping technology. Battery-swapping eTrucks provide a unique advantage — instead of waiting for the truck to charge, drivers can quickly exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one at dedicated swapping stations. This not only cuts down turnaround time but also makes electric logistics more efficient and scalable for 24×7 port operations. Furthermore, BMCT, one of the container terminals at JN Port launched a zero-emission green transport corridor in Nhava Sheva, linking terminals, CFS, and customer facilities in 2024.

The port’s green initiative aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ push towards decarbonization and digitalisation of the maritime sector. By promoting electric mobility and green logistics, JNPA is not only playing a critical role in creating a more sustainable and future-ready port ecosystem, but is strengthening its position as a model for sustainable port development in India.
