Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority – Sustainable Terminals Development at the Port of Takoradi

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has delivered a transformative, sustainability-driven infrastructure program at the Port of Takoradi through the development of two strategic facilities: the Dry Bulk Terminal (DBT) and the Takoradi Natural Gas Liquids Export Terminal (TNET). Together, these facilities demonstrate how innovative engineering, sustainable land reclamation and modern cargo-handling technologies can optimise port capacity, enhance operational efficiency, strengthen climate resilience and support sustainable economic growth.

The DBT features an 800-metre quay with a 16-metre depth, an automated enclosed conveyor system and twin ship loaders capable of handling 2,500 metric tonnes per hour each. The terminal has transformed bulk loading operations from approximately 8,000 metric tonnes per day under conventional methods to significantly higher throughput levels while reducing cargo losses, dust emissions and environmental impacts through the use of Eco Hoppers and enclosed transfer systems.

The TNET, developed in partnership with Genser Energy Limited, provides approximately 40,000 m³ of cryogenic storage capacity for propane and butane exports, supporting cleaner energy supply chains. Built on reclaimed land within the Port, the facility incorporates advanced safety systems, shoreline protection measures and elevated infrastructure platforms to enhance long-term climate resilience.

Both projects were developed largely on reclaimed land created through the beneficial reuse of dredged materials, maximising existing port space and avoiding extensive greenfield development. They directly support the IAPH Infrastructure Award criteria by deploying state-of-the-art facilities, addressing critical infrastructure constraints, improving environmental performance and strengthening climate adaptation measures. Furthermore, the projects advance multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDGs 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 17, positioning the Port of Takoradi as a model for sustainable, resilient and future-ready port infrastructure development.
