Fiji Ports – Advancing Green Port Infrastructure in the Pacific

Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) is setting a regional benchmark in sustainable maritime operations through the implementation of its Green Port Master Plan (2019–2025)—a comprehensive, action-oriented framework driving an array of decarbonization and climate resilience initiatives. Anchored in Fiji’s national climate objectives and international commitments, the Plan reflects bold leadership in advancing low-carbon and smart port infrastructure in the Pacific.

Fiji Ports was the first port in the Pacific to undergo an energy audit in 2016, a foundational step that catalyzed its sustainability transformation. Under the Green Port Master Plan, FPCL has progressively rolled out multiple projects targeting energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste reduction, and emissions monitoring. Specifically, FPCL expanded its renewable energy footprint through the installation of a 28.29kW solar PV system at its Head Office, significantly lowering its reliance on grid-based electricity. This is part of a larger suite of integrated solutions deployed across the organization, including an internal Energy Tracker, Green Port Dashboard for real-time monitoring, and LED lighting upgrades across port infrastructure.

Building on this success, in 2024, FPCL became the first port in the Pacific to achieve ISO 50001:2018 certification for Energy Management Systems—a landmark achievement underscoring its commitment to institutional excellence and sustainable infrastructure governance. These actions reflect FPCL’s role as a pathfinder for other Small Island Developing States, offering a replicable model that harmonizes economic development with environmental responsibility.
