Port of Hamburg – Road Energy Production System (REPS)

The Port of Hamburg, in collaboration with HCS and REPS, has implemented an innovative road power plant, the world’s first of its kind, that transforms port traffic into a source of renewable energy. Installed within an active port environment, the system captures otherwise lost kinetic energy from passing vehicles and converts it into clean electricity, turning existing infrastructure into a productive energy asset. This project demonstrates a highly original approach to decarbonizing port operations. Rather than relying solely on conventional renewable energy sources, it introduces a new layer of energy generation embedded directly into logistics infrastructure. The Port of Hamburg has shown strong leadership by piloting this forward-looking solution and positioning itself as a living lab for sustainable innovation.

The installation is already operational and delivers measurable impact. Within the first six months of continuous operation, over 115,000 trucks have passed the system, generating more than 7,000 kWh of renewable energy and saving over 2 tons of CO₂ emissions. Installed at a stop sign, where vehicles naturally decelerate, the system efficiently harvests energy from unavoidable traffic flows. It requires no additional land use, utilizes already sealed surfaces, and is modular, scalable, and cost-efficient. The solution shows strong replication potential. On public port roads alone (excluding terminals), up to 230 systems could be deployed, generating approximately 10 GWh of energy yearly, amortizing in under four years, and reducing up to 9.81% of CO₂ emissions caused by port traffic.

The project directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and 13 (Climate Action), demonstrating how infrastructure can be reimagined to support the energy transition. Developed through close collaboration between port authorities, technology providers, and local stakeholders, this world’s first operational road power plant sets a new benchmark for sustainable port infrastructure.
