Port of Khalifa – Coral Reef protection

The study area for this monitoring campaign is situated between the western edge of the Ras Ghanada breakwater and the eastern part of the Khalifa Port. The monitored area excludes Khalifa Port, but includes the entire biologically rich precinct that could be impacted by the Port operational activities. This area contains sensitive habitats that would rapidly degrade in the case of an impact. The monitoring programme is designed to serve as a management tool that allows to evaluate any potential impact caused by the operational processes and to satisfy requirements vis-à-vis the environmental legislation of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Therefore, the monitoring programme was designed to:

  • Provide quantitative, unequivocal information
  • Be cost effective
  • Be precise in its findings
  • Be scientifically sound
  • Be non-invasive
  • Be continuous
  • Be related to a baseline assessment
