Port of Amsterdam – MISA software application

Each port terminal that receives sea-going ships must comply with statutory requirements to ensure terminal security. Companies must apply for ISPS certification every 5 years. The certification process can often be time-consuming, but the MISA application (MISA-app) makes this process much easier. This smart web-based software assists companies when applying for certification and helps ports in assessing the security of terminals and monitoring the implementation of improvements.

MISA-app is based on the Methodology for Impartial Security Assessments, a four steps process for establishing a Port Facility Security Assessment and approving a Port Facility Security Plan. This methodology was developed by Port of Amsterdam and is since 2016 in use by many of the ports in The Netherlands.

In the application Port Facility Security Officers and Port Security Auditors work together in one transparent digital environment, carrying out real-time tasks and sending each other messages through the application. This ensures that information is always up-to-date and makes the status of the certification process transparent to its users. MISA-app makes obtaining an ISPS certification quicker, easier and transparent.

Although in 2017 the phase 1 development of MISA-app focused on port security assessments, the application will now be further developed to also support supervision processes (phase 2). New functionality will include the registration of drills and exercises, the reporting of incidents, and the support of cyber security. This way the MISA-app will grow from a single application to a platform for efficient and effective port security processes: The MISA Platform.
